Subsequent to spending several months as a sculptural artist in the wilderness of the Pacific North West, I became increasingly aware of the balance, structures, beauty and diversity within the natural world. I was given an opportunity to explore and experience a new connection to the environment and interpret nature through art. In examining and collecting individual elements, I began to create works of assembled materials that emulate the transformations of nature and intuitively celebrate the patterns and cycles I witnessed. As a result, my artwork became a conduit to connect with communities and the natural world.
The structures in nature that grow in masses or an object that hides infinite details and are cautious to expose interior forms are the sources of my inspiration. I find what is microscopic, underneath or hidden fascinating, and worth further investigation and contemplation. By looking a little closer to examine the elements, it is possible to see the incredible variety, strength and fragility of a forever-changing scene. The decision to create installations on-site allows me to emulate nature and interact with people and the environment, occupying the space with new forms, encouraging contemplation of nature and our place in it. Working in public spaces and interacting with the casual on-lookers, allows viewers to discover a new environment growing within an unfamiliar setting. It is in the process of creation where I feel strongly connected to the natural environment by reproducing these patterns and sequences – giving a deeper understanding to the multiple and persistent forces which occur repeatedly.
Contained within an installation, a new and intimate relationship exists. Through my use of natural materials, the forms exude an essence of life’s processes, evincing the cyclical impermanence of individual existence. By following nature’s behaviors and repeating the constant motions of change, I have a deeper observation and understanding of how continual our existence is and that there is no true end.
